If you have not been single for twenty or thirty years, writing a dating profile can feel like being asked to describe yourself in an exam. The good news is that you do not need to be clever or polished. You only need to be honest, warm and specific. Here is how to make it easier.
Start with who you are today
Your profile is a snapshot of you now, not a summary of everything that has happened. Think about what you enjoy at the moment: gardening, long walks, cooking for friends, crosswords, old films, travelling, volunteering. Pick three or four and add a small detail to each. "I love walking" is fine. "I love early walks along the coast with a flask of tea" tells a story.
Mention your loss in your own way
You do not have to explain your whole story, but being open can help you meet people who understand. A simple line such as "I lost my husband a few years ago and I am ready to enjoy life again" is gentle and clear. You can say as much or as little as you like. Many members find that mentioning it early saves awkward moments later, and attracts others who have been through something similar.
Say what you are looking for
Be clear about what you hope for, whether that is friendship, a relationship or simply someone to chat with. Clarity is kind to everyone. You might write, "I am looking for someone kind and good company, to share days out and quiet evenings."
Choose photos that look like you
Pick recent photos in which you are smiling and relaxed. One clear head-and-shoulders picture and one or two showing you enjoying a hobby work well. Avoid group photos where it is hard to tell who you are, and avoid pictures with your late spouse, which can be upsetting for you and confusing for others.
Keep it positive and short
A few short paragraphs are plenty. Focus on what you do want rather than a list of things you will not tolerate. Read it aloud. If it sounds like something you would say over a cup of tea, you are on the right track.
A simple structure to follow
1. A friendly opening line about you.
2. Two or three interests with small details.
3. A line about what you are hoping to find.
4. A warm closing sentence inviting someone to say hello.
Be patient with yourself
You can change your profile at any time. Try it for a week, see who gets in touch, and tweak it. Remember that the right person will appreciate honesty far more than perfection.
